Engineering Design Challenge 3
Engineering Design Challenge (EDC) is a regional university-level engineering competition. It was launched for the first time in the American University of Beirut by the AUB Robotics Club in 2015. This year, EDC 3 is coming back with a new creative theme: Mars Colonization.
EDC 3 welcomes students from any major, university and country to participate. To do so, students need to form teams of 2 to 5 players to compete for a chance to a win a grand prize of $1500 for first place, $1000 for second, and $500 for third. No specific platform is required in order to reduce implementation costs for participating teams
Engineering education in the region’s universities lacks good practical experience; many engineers graduate without having the chance to apply or implement concepts they’ve learned in their fields. Moreover, problem solving skills and self-learning aren’t always encouraged in traditional university education. For industrial growth and technical innovation to boom, there is need for more hands-on experience for students.
EDC offers practical experience to mold students into confident engineers who can connect the dots between what is offered in courses and what is useful, and are willing to learn something new on their own and further their skills. EDC’s main goal is educational; students can better understand what they learn once they get the opportunity to apply it. The competitive spirit of EDC encourages university students to work independently and research new concepts, integrating fun into the learning process, which makes for a more involved university experience.
EDC is the first competition in the MENA region that deeply tackles university-level engineering concepts such as control theory models, machine learning techniques, navigation systems, computer vision, and other concepts in mechanical, electrical, and computer engineering. In the future, EDC will grow to focus on more tasks from various engineering disciplines.
This year’s theme: Mars Colonization. As the earth is nearing its end, humanity is faced with a race against time. You are the head of the Robotics Coalition in the Lebanese Rocket Society, you are tasked with building a robot to conquer space and establish a human colony on Mars. The robots you shall build need to survey the planet, prepare the base area and make Mars more habitable for us humans to build a starting colony to ensure the survival of the human race.
Registration is open from Sept. 22,2017 to Dec 20, 2017. To register, enter your team info in this form, and our recruitment team will contact you for finalizing the process.
Registration fees are $10 per person, to cover some basic expenses on the competition day.
